The Hobbit

The Hobbit was a story I enjoyed both reading and watching as a film series. The character Bilbo Baggins is one of the most compelling characters in the story because of his character arc through the course of the story. His development as a character was really fun to explore because at first, he is this humble little hobbit who minds his business and secludes himself from others. Bilbo's home in Hobbiton is his safe place and he has lived there for his whole life. when he is offered a job by the dwarves to be their personal burglar, his whole world changes. He acquires a sword, encounters goblins and monsters that he must fight off, and is tasked with stealing the Arkenstone, a prized possession among dwarf kings in the musty mountain. At the end of the story, Bilbo is a different hobbit. He does not return the same, and the other hobbits in Hobbiton seem to lose respect for him. He is not worried about it and seems to have grown as a better hobbit from his long, dangerous quest.

In the film version of the story "The Hobbit" by Peter Jackson, I really enjoyed how Bilbo changed after he stole the "One Ring." from Gollum. It seems that some of the prominent characters in the story deal with some sort of corruption that they are faced with. For Bilbo, it was acquiring the One Ring. He became hooked to it, and it slowly turns him into a monster, something that he isn't. Later in the story, the leader of the dwarves named Thorin becomes corrupted with Gold, also known as dragon sickness. The dragon in the mountain named Smaug, acts as a gatekeeper who guards the mountain's treasure from outsiders.

I liked how in the film version, they made Smaug able to speak to the characters. Smaug is portrayed as a vicious creature who uses dragon sickness against Thorin. In other words, Smaug wants Thorin to allow himself to be corrupted by his own greed, driving him into insanity. Bilbo and the rest of the charcters try to snap him out, but Thorin eventually overcomes this sickness and realizes that is not who he is. I believe every character in the story turns out to be better in the end. They learn alot from each other and build friendships with each other.
